Video Refresher Tutorials - The Story of Rikki Tikki Tavi

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a brave and loyal creature, created by Rudyard Kipling, the master storyteller and Nobel Prize winner (1907). The story of Rikki is a part of the world famous "Jungle Book"

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi's adventure appeals both to children and adults. It is set in India during the past century and evokes an atmosphere of mystery and magic in the vast and deepest of the Indian jungles. Rikki is a mongoose, a furry and lively animal whose ability to fight successfully against dangerous snakes is well known and appreciated in India, where snakes are an everyday part of life - and death.

After having been rescued from certain death by a human family, he returns their good deed by protecting them fiercely against snakes and their deadly venom. The story touches on all the things we value : strong and loyal friends, protection and support, and the ability to know when its time to stand up for yourself and take risks if you need to.  The story appeals to children and adults alike, is very funny in parts, and very touching in others.

Rudyard Kipling's early works have to be placed in the context of the expanding British Empire. Some of his writings unfortunately contain some imperialist, racist or racialist overtones.  But the many mystery tales he wrote (The Jungle Book, Kim, Just So Stories) are free of any politically offensive themes. They are beautifully narrated, well observed and full of imagination!
